Naperville, IL – A 14-year-old Naperville boy is facing felony charges after police allegedly discovered a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun during a downtown “teen takeover” event Saturday night.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the teen was arrested around 7:33 p.m. Saturday near Washington Street and Jefferson Avenue. Naperville Police say an officer conducting extra patrols during the crowded event allegedly noticed the boy acting suspiciously. During a safety pat-down, the officer allegedly recovered a loaded pistol from the juvenile’s waistband.

The teen has been charged with one count of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, a Class 4 Felony. Judge Chantelle Porter ordered the teen released to home detention with electronic monitoring following a detention hearing held Monday.

“The allegation that a fourteen-year-old boy was in possession of a loaded, semi-automatic handgun during an extremely crowded event in downtown Naperville is extremely disturbing,” said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin. “Once again, the Naperville Police Department’s vigilant policing and heads up work led to the removal of an allegedly illegally possessed handgun from our streets and possibly prevented a future tragedy.”

Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres echoed that concern, crediting officers for acting quickly and professionally. “This was a disturbing discovery by our officers, and I could not be more grateful to them for their vigilance and professionalism,” he said. “Naperville should expect to continue seeing a large police presence in our downtown, at special events, and anywhere large groups are congregating.”

The juvenile is scheduled to appear in court again on June 27 in front of Judge Porter. Authorities emphasized that the charges are allegations, and the teen is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
