MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Steady fall rain drenched portions of Horry County over the past 24 hours, with localized totals topping 1.4 inches near Bucksport and Socastee, leading to slick roads and ponding in low-lying areas. Light showers are expected to linger through Thursday morning before drier, cooler air moves in.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the heaviest rain fell late Wednesday into early Thursday, concentrated from Conway south to Myrtle Beach. Bucksport recorded 1.42 inches, Socastee 1.41 inches, and Garden City 0.87 inches. Lighter totals of 0.45–0.50 inches were noted near Surfside Beach, Shallotte, and Masonboro, while inland areas such as Kingstree and Wilmington saw less than 0.15 inches.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation reported wet pavement on U.S. 501, U.S. 17, and S.C. 9, with minor delays during the morning commute. Drivers are urged to slow down on slick roadways and allow extra stopping distance, especially near intersections and coastal bridges.
By Thursday afternoon, clearing skies and north winds are expected to drop humidity and temperatures across the Grand Strand. Overnight lows could dip into the upper 40s inland by early Friday, bringing a noticeable taste of fall after the midweek soaking.
NWS forecasters said additional rain is unlikely through the weekend as a high-pressure system builds from the west. Residents should take advantage of the dry spell to clean gutters and prepare for cooler nights ahead.
