Wilmington, North Carolina – Sweltering heat grips southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina today, as heat index values soar past 100°F in several cities for the last time this week. Residents across the region, including Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, and Conway, should brace for potentially dangerous conditions Friday before a sharp cooldown arrives this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, most communities will experience their highest heat index readings of the week Friday afternoon, with peaks between 100°F and 104°F from Conway to Surf City. The combination of heat and humidity will push “feels-like” temperatures into the red zone from noon through 6 p.m., especially inland and along the coast. Areas such as Bolivia, Kingstree, and Lumberton are all forecast to see maximum values near or above 100°F.

Outdoor activity is discouraged Friday, especially during peak afternoon hours. Stay hydrated, check on neighbors, and never leave children or pets in parked cars. Local schools and employers may adjust schedules or open cooling centers due to the dangerous heat. By Saturday, high temperatures will drop into the mid-80s with much lower humidity, giving way to overnight lows in the upper 60s—offering a welcome break from oppressive conditions not seen since late June.

This cooler, drier pattern is expected to last through at least early next week. Additional advisories will be issued if necessary, but Friday’s heat is likely the last major event for now.
