Huntsville, Ala. – Dangerous heat will grip northern Alabama through Thursday afternoon, with heat index values pushing between 100 and 108 degrees. The combination of high humidity and soaring temperatures is expected to create hazardous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, the most intense heat will build Sunday through Wednesday, with both Huntsville and Muscle Shoals expected to reach peak heat index readings of 107 to 108 degrees. Thursday may bring slight relief, but temperatures will remain well above seasonal averages.
Health officials urge residents to take precautions such as limiting outdoor activity to early morning or evening hours, drinking plenty of water, and wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing. The NWS stresses the importance of never leaving children or pets in vehicles, where interior temperatures can rise rapidly to life-threatening levels.
The heat will also strain outdoor workers, athletes, and the elderly, increasing risks of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Local emergency management officials recommend frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces and using sunscreen when outside for any length of time.
Heat advisories remain in effect through at least midweek, and additional alerts could be issued if conditions persist.
