Munster, IN – Emergency crews are continuing to investigate an odor and visible sheen near inactive BP pipelines in Munster after multiple calls were reported Tuesday from residents in the southwest corner of Cobblestones.
According to a press release from the Munster Fire Department, firefighters determined that underground BP pipelines were in the area and reached out to the company for assistance. BP later confirmed that response crews identified a sheen, which can be a sign of petroleum products or other substances spreading across a water surface.
The company reported that absorbent booms have been placed to contain and collect the material while crews work with local authorities to identify the source. Air monitoring has also been established as a precaution, with no elevated readings detected as of Wednesday.
A sheen in water often appears shiny or iridescent and can indicate the presence of oil, according to environmental agencies. Even a small sheen may suggest a petroleum leak, making it significant in environmental assessments. Authorities have advised the public to avoid the area and follow instructions from on-scene personnel until further notice.
The Munster Fire Department said the investigation is ongoing and stressed that the safety of responders, residents and the environment remains its highest priority. Officials said updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
