Portland, OR – Authorities are investigating the death of an adult who was found unresponsive while in custody early Wednesday morning at the Multnomah County Inverness Jail in northeast Portland.
According to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), deputies discovered the individual unresponsive in a housing dorm at approximately 2:40 a.m. Wednesday at the jail, located at 11540 Northeast Inverness Drive. Immediate lifesaving efforts were initiated at the facility.
MCSO said corrections health personnel with the Multnomah County Health Department provided emergency medical care until Portland Fire Bureau paramedics and American Medical Response (AMR) arrived. The individual was transported to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
“Our thoughts are with the family of the person who died as we move through this investigation,” said Multnomah County Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O’Donnell in a statement. She added that incidents of this nature can also impact jail staff and partner agencies involved in emergency response.
In line with standard protocol for in-custody deaths, the East County Major Crimes Team was activated to conduct an independent investigation. The team includes detectives from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Portland Police Bureau, Gresham Police Department, and Oregon State Police.
The Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office is leading the death investigation and will determine the cause and manner of death. Officials said the individual’s name, age, and additional details will be released after next of kin have been notified.
MCSO noted that the information released so far is based on preliminary findings and may change as the investigation continues. No additional details were available as of Wednesday afternoon.
