Birmingham, AL — After weeks of dry and abnormally warm conditions, a much-needed shift toward wetter weather is on the way for Alabama. The National Weather Service in Birmingham reports that a series of chilly rain events is expected to move into the region beginning late tonight and continuing into next week.

Scattered showers are forecast overnight into Sunday, but the most significant rainfall arrives Monday night into Tuesday morning, when a widespread, soaking rain event is expected across much of central and eastern Alabama. Forecasters say rainfall may be heavy at times, particularly southeast of Interstate 59, where the highest totals are likely to occur.

The return of rain is timely, as the latest U.S. Drought Monitor update shows Moderate to Extreme drought conditions across a large portion of the state. Central and southeastern Alabama remain the hardest hit, with drought expected to persist for months. The Alabama Forestry Commission continues to urge residents to follow the Fire Danger Advisory, citing ongoing wildfire risk despite the incoming wet pattern.

By midweek, a brief lull in precipitation is expected before another round of showers becomes possible later in the week, signaling a wetter overall pattern heading into early December.

Forecasters emphasize that while the upcoming rainfall will not break the drought, it will at least provide temporary relief and slow the progression of dry conditions. Residents should prepare for periods of chilly rain, occasional gusty winds, and potential localized ponding in areas that see steadier downpours.

More updates are expected as confidence increases in next week’s rainfall amounts and timing.
