Mt. Vernon, IL – A traffic stop in Mt. Vernon early Sunday morning led to the arrest of a 58-year-old man after deputies allegedly discovered methamphetamine and an illegal weapon inside his vehicle.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy initiated the stop on August 24 after witnessing a traffic violation near Fairfield Road and Cooper Street. Officers from the Mt. Vernon Police Department, including a K-9 unit, responded to assist in the investigation. Authorities said the search revealed methamphetamine and an illegal “slap jack”-style weapon inside the car.

The driver, identified by law enforcement as Lerone B. McWilliams, allegedly owned and operated the vehicle involved. Deputies said McWilliams was arrested on suspicion of unlawful possession of methamphetamine and unlawful use of weapons. He was transported to the Jefferson County Jail, where he awaits a pretrial detention hearing.

Sheriff’s officials emphasized that McWilliams is considered innocent unless proven guilty in court. The office did not release further details regarding the quantity of drugs recovered or whether additional charges are expected.

The incident remains under investigation, and authorities said no injuries were reported during the stop.
