Mt. Vernon, IL – Felon Arrested on Gun Charges After Police Search in Large Crowd at Veterans Park

Mt. Vernon, IL – Mt. Vernon Police successfully apprehended a suspect from a large crowd at Veterans Park on Monday, April 8th, 2024, culminating in his arrest on multiple gun charges for allegedly brandishing a firearm. The incident unfolded when officers responded to a disturbance call involving a crowd that quickly grew to include as many as 75 individuals. Amidst the confusion, police were on the lookout for 33-year-old Antonio McShane, who was reportedly seen displaying a weapon during the altercation.

The event initially began with a smaller disturbance reported around 5:06 p.m. near 24th and Lamar, escalating to a larger confrontation at Veterans Park by 5:29 p.m. Upon arrival, law enforcement witnessed several skirmishes within the crowd and were informed of McShane’s alleged actions. Despite resistance, McShane was detained, leading to a search operation for the firearm he was accused of brandishing.

With the assistance of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and off-duty officers, a thorough search was conducted, resulting in the discovery of a loaded handgun inside a van believed to be associated with McShane. This find led to McShane facing charges, including Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Resisting Arrest, and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.
