Mount Vernon, IL – A 22-year-old Mount Vernon man was arrested Tuesday after a shooting and vehicle crash that left one person injured.
According to the Mount Vernon Police Department, officers responded around 11:24 a.m. to the area of South 34th Street and Peach Street for reports of gunfire. When officers arrived, they located a vehicle that had been involved in an accident and showed evidence of a shooting. A short time later, police found the other vehicle involved in the crash near the 600 block of Strawberry, where two victims were located.
Police said one victim declined medical treatment, while another was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Mount Vernon Fire Department, Litton’s Ambulance, and Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies also responded to assist.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for the suspect’s apartment in Mount Vernon before locating him in Centralia, Illinois. He was taken back to the Mount Vernon Police Department for questioning. Authorities said the incident was not a random act of violence but rather a targeted situation.
At the conclusion of the investigation, Amil Ganaway, 22, of Mount Vernon, was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and unlawful possession of a firearm with a revoked FOID card. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail.
Police emphasized that all charges are allegations at this time, and Ganaway is considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
