Mount Vernon, IL: Gunfire Leaves Two Dead, Five Injured Early Sunday Morning

Mount Vernon, IL – Two people are dead and five others are recovering following a shooting incident early Sunday morning in Mount Vernon.

According to a statement released by the Mount Vernon Police Department, officers responded to multiple reports of gunfire around 12:49 a.m. in the 600 block of South 15th Street. Emergency personnel from Littons Ambulance and the Mount Vernon Fire Department also assisted at the scene.

Authorities said several individuals were found with gunshot wounds upon arrival. All victims were transported to area hospitals either by ambulance or private vehicles. Two victims were later pronounced dead, while five others remain hospitalized with gunshot-related injuries.

Police have not released the names of those involved, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation and the need to notify families.

“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” said Assistant Chief Travis Chapman in the department’s release. “We urge anyone with information regarding this crime to contact the Mt. Vernon Police Department immediately.”

Support from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police has been enlisted as the investigation continues.
