Morgan County, AL – A traffic stop near the Cotaco Pure gas station Tuesday evening led to a brief pursuit and multiple charges for a 51-year-old man, according to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say around 11 p.m. on November 11, 2025, Patrol Deputy Couch observed a red Ford Fusion without a current registration sticker and initiated a stop. When the deputy activated emergency lights and sirens, the driver allegedly sped away, turning onto Luker Road and continuing at high speed before stopping on Matkin Cove Road due to a flat tire.

According to the sheriff’s report, the driver—identified as Nakia Wayne Waits—was taken into custody after a felony traffic stop. Waits allegedly told deputies he fled because his driver’s license had been revoked and he didn’t want another ticket. Authorities later confirmed that the tag on the vehicle had been switched and the car was uninsured.

Waits was arrested and charged with attempting to elude a police officer, driving while suspended or revoked, failure to signal, improper lane usage, switched tag, and operating a vehicle without insurance. His bond was set at $1,800.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents that all arrests are public information and that suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
