North Carolina – Gray skies hang low over the Crystal Coast, and damp air clings to roads and docks as weather patterns shift again. What feels calm now won’t last. A noticeable weekend change is lining up, with warmer air briefly surging before rain moves in and temperatures slide back down.

According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, dry and cool conditions hold through Friday night, with clear skies allowing temperatures to dip into the lower 20s inland. Saturday brings a sharp warm-up as southwest winds strengthen, pushing afternoon highs into the lower 60s across Carteret County. To be fair, it may feel more like early spring than mid-January.

That warmth sets the stage for the next change. Clouds thicken Saturday night, and scattered rain develops late as moisture increases from the southwest. Roads may stay dry early, but conditions deteriorate heading into Sunday.

Rain becomes more widespread Sunday, with an 80 percent chance of steady showers by afternoon. Highs fall back toward the upper 40s, and visibility could drop during heavier bursts, especially along U.S. 70 and coastal connectors. Plan extra time if traveling Sunday, and keep headlights on during rain.

By Sunday night, skies begin to clear, but colder air returns quickly. Lows drop into the lower 20s, raising concern for slick spots where rainwater lingers. Bridges and shaded roads may refreeze early Monday.

Looking ahead, next week trends drier but cooler, with plenty of sunshine and crisp mornings. More daylight slowly returns, but winter still controls the pace. Traveling or heading out on the water this weekend? Let us know what conditions you’re seeing.
