MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Gale-force northeast winds will pound coastal North Carolina and the Pamlico-Albemarle system tonight through early Wednesday, bringing dangerous marine conditions, rough surf, and possible coastal flooding from Duck to Surf City. Wind gusts up to 45 mph and seas building as high as 17 feet are expected to make conditions extremely hazardous for all vessels.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a Gale Warning remains in effect from 8 p.m. Monday through early Wednesday for the Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds, the Neuse and Bay Rivers, and offshore waters from Currituck Beach Light south to Surf City. Winds will increase rapidly after sunset Monday as strong high pressure over the Northeast funnels air down the coast.

The U.S. Coast Guard and North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries urge mariners to remain in port, secure boats, and avoid crossing inlets during the height of the event. Wave action near the Outer Banks and Cape Hatteras will make navigation extremely difficult, even for larger vessels. Beach erosion and overwash could occur along Highway 12, with minor flooding possible in low-lying soundside communities.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, though lingering swells and rough surf may persist through midweek. Coastal residents should secure outdoor items, check moorings, and monitor updates for any coastal flood advisories.
