MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – A soggy Columbus Day weekend is underway across eastern North Carolina as coastal flooding and relentless rain continue to impact travel and beach conditions through Saturday night. Gusty northeast winds and dangerous surf will make outdoor plans risky, especially near shorelines and low-lying roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, a Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until early Monday, with up to 2 feet of inundation possible in low-lying areas. The Beach Hazards Statement is also active through Saturday evening, warning of strong rip currents and large breaking waves. Flood-prone zones near US-70, including parts of Carteret County and the Beaufort waterfront, may see brief closures or lane restrictions.

Residents and travelers are urged to avoid flooded roads, secure outdoor decorations, and use caution near docks or seawalls. High surf will continue through Sunday, and strong onshore flow could worsen coastal flooding during high tide cycles. The heaviest rain is expected from midday Saturday into late evening, with several inches possible across the region.

By Monday, drier air should move in for Columbus Day events, with skies gradually clearing and temperatures climbing into the 70s. Early next week looks seasonably mild, offering better conditions for pumpkin patch visits and fall festivals after this soggy stretch.
