Morehead City, North Carolina – Confidence is increasing that wintry weather could impact eastern North Carolina this weekend, though forecasters say important details remain uncertain as the system comes into better focus.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, precipitation is likely this weekend, but it is still unclear whether it will fall primarily as snow, freezing rain, or rain. The type and severity of impacts will vary by location, particularly depending on proximity to the coast versus inland areas.

NWS probability graphics show a high likelihood of at least minor winter weather impacts from Saturday evening through Sunday evening across much of eastern North Carolina. Officials caution that while the current outlook highlights minor impacts, more significant impacts remain possible, especially if colder air becomes more firmly established.

Forecasters note that the storm track remains highly sensitive, with shifts of as little as 50 miles potentially making a major difference in precipitation type. A colder, offshore track would increase the risk of snow or freezing rain, while a warmer inland track would favor mostly rain, though ice could still be a concern inland.

If wintry precipitation develops, roadway conditions could deteriorate quickly, particularly overnight and early Sunday. Drivers should be alert on U.S. Highway 70, U.S. Highway 17, NC Highway 24, and coastal bridges, where freezing conditions can develop first.

The National Weather Service strongly advises residents not to anchor to a single forecast at this stage. Instead, officials urge continued monitoring of updates through weather.gov/mhx and trusted local sources as confidence improves.

Residents are also encouraged to begin adjusting weekend travel plans, ensure household supplies are adequate, and prepare for the possibility of limited travel or temporary disruptions.

Commuters, students, and weekend travelers across eastern North Carolina should remain especially attentive to updates late this week, as forecast details are expected to evolve rapidly.
