Morehead City, North Carolina – Isolated strong thunderstorms are expected to develop across eastern North Carolina this afternoon and evening, with the greatest concern being damaging wind gusts capable of downing tree limbs and causing isolated power outages. Storms may first form along the sea breeze before additional activity moves in from the west later today.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop during the afternoon near the coast as the sea breeze strengthens. A second round of storms may approach from inland during the evening, increasing storm coverage across parts of eastern North Carolina. While widespread severe weather is not expected, a few storms could become strong enough to produce damaging wind gusts.
The greatest storm potential extends across the northwestern and northern portions of eastern North Carolina, including communities such as Greenville, New Bern, Kinston, Jacksonville, Morehead City, Washington, Williamston and surrounding areas. Frequent lightning, brief heavy rainfall and localized ponding on roadways will also be possible in stronger thunderstorms.
Residents with outdoor plans should monitor weather conditions throughout the afternoon and evening, especially near beaches, parks and sporting events. Move indoors immediately if thunder is heard and secure loose outdoor items before storms arrive. Drivers should also be prepared for sudden downpours and reduced visibility during the evening commute.
The threat for isolated strong thunderstorms will diminish later tonight, but additional weather statements or severe thunderstorm warnings may be issued if storms intensify across eastern North Carolina.
