North Carolina — Cold air hangs low over coastal neighborhoods this morning as clouds thicken offshore. The breeze already feels sharper, and wet pavement hints at what’s coming next. Conditions are lining up fast for a dangerous winter stretch across eastern North Carolina.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Morehead City and surrounding counties from Friday evening through Sunday. Snow totals between 6 and 11 inches are possible, with winds gusting up to 45 mph. Blowing snow could reduce visibility quickly, especially near open water and exposed roadways.
A Wind Advisory and Extreme Cold Watch follow close behind. As colder air pours in late Saturday night, wind chills could plunge as low as 4 degrees below zero. Frostbite and hypothermia become real risks with prolonged exposure. Power outages are possible if strong gusts bring down tree limbs.
Snow develops late tonight as rain briefly mixes in, then changes fully to snow by early Saturday. Heavy snow bands may set up through Saturday night. By Sunday, snow tapers, but bitter cold and strong winds linger. Any melting during daylight hours may refreeze quickly after sunset, creating icy roads.
Travel could become very difficult along US-70, local bridges, and coastal routes. Plan ahead. Delay travel if possible. Keep emergency supplies in vehicles, and secure loose outdoor items before winds increase.
This storm connects to a broader Arctic blast gripping much of the eastern U.S. With colder air locked in, early February could stay active across the Carolinas before a gradual warmup midweek.
