Morehead City, NC – For the second straight night, eastern North Carolina may catch a glimpse of the northern lights, as another powerful G4 geomagnetic storm continues to energize skies across much of the U.S.

According to the US National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City and the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, strong to severe geomagnetic storm conditions are ongoing, with visibility extending unusually far south — possibly including parts of the Crystal Coast and Inner Banks.

Similar to last night’s display, the aurora could appear as a faint red or green glow near the northern horizon between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m., especially in rural and coastal areas with minimal light pollution. Skies are expected to remain mostly clear, increasing the odds of seeing this rare southern event.

The NOAA reports that storm conditions may persist through early Thursday as another coronal mass ejection (CME) impacts Earth, keeping aurora potential high across much of the East Coast.

If you spot the northern lights over North Carolina tonight, share your photos and where you viewed them — this could be a once-in-a-decade sight for the state.
