Morehead City, NC – A noticeable warmup is spreading across eastern North Carolina today, bringing the mildest temperatures the region has seen in nearly three weeks, though cooler conditions will persist along the immediate coast.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, high temperatures will climb into the mid-60s across much of inland eastern North Carolina, while coastal areas remain cooler, with highs generally in the low to mid-50s. The temperature difference is attributed to very cold ocean water, which continues to moderate conditions near the shoreline.

Inland communities along US-70, US-17, and NC-11, including areas west of Morehead City and New Bern, are expected to experience the warmest conditions this afternoon. Sunshine will dominate, supporting efficient warming away from the coast.

Along the beaches and barrier islands, including travel routes such as NC-12, temperatures will remain significantly cooler despite clear skies. Persistent onshore influence from cold Atlantic waters will limit warming near the coast, keeping beach communities several degrees colder than inland locations.

Overnight temperatures tonight are forecast to fall into the low 50s inland and the upper 40s along the coast, remaining well above freezing and continuing the break from recent winter cold.

The National Weather Service notes that this warmup represents a temporary pause in winter conditions, often described as the “warmest weather in almost three weeks” for inland areas. No hazardous weather or travel concerns are associated with today’s conditions.

Commuters, students, and outdoor workers may notice a sharp contrast between inland and coastal temperatures, particularly during the afternoon.

Residents are encouraged to enjoy the mild conditions while remaining aware that coastal areas will continue to feel cooler due to cold water temperatures.
