New Bern, North Carolina – A significant surge of arctic air combined with strong winds will bring dangerous cold, hazardous travel, and coastal impacts across Eastern North Carolina this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City, cold temperatures will arrive early Saturday, with strong northwest winds increasing through Saturday evening. Wind gusts of 40 to 60 mph are expected in many locations, especially near exposed areas and along major corridors such as U.S. Highway 17, U.S. 70, U.S. 264, and NC Highway 12.

A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for northeastern portions of Eastern North Carolina from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, while an Extreme Cold Watch covers much of the region Saturday night through Sunday morning. Wind chills are forecast to drop into the single digits and lower teens, with some inland areas briefly feeling near 0 degrees overnight.

The National Weather Service warns that frostbite and hypothermia can occur if skin is exposed for extended periods. In addition, exposed pipes may rupture, and unprotected pets and livestock could be at risk.

Marine and coastal conditions will deteriorate rapidly. Wind Advisories are in effect for the Outer Banks and Down East Carteret, while Gale and Storm Warnings cover adjacent coastal waters and sounds. Along the coast, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands from 7 a.m. Saturday through 7 a.m. Sunday, where 1 to 2 feet of soundside inundation is possible.

Travelers should prepare for hazardous conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles on bridges and open roadways. Loose outdoor items should be secured ahead of the strongest winds.

Conditions will gradually improve late Sunday as winds diminish, though cold temperatures will persist into early next week.

Residents are urged to bundle up, limit outdoor exposure, and monitor updated forecasts at weather.gov/mhx as this high-impact winter event unfolds.
