Morehead City, NC – Increasing confidence in ice and freezing rain is raising travel concerns across Eastern North Carolina this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service office in Newport/Morehead City, forecasters are continuing to track the potential for a significant winter storm from Saturday morning through Monday morning. The latest forecast shows higher confidence in freezing rain and ice impacts, while the probability of widespread snow has decreased for most areas except north of U.S. Highway 264.

The National Weather Service said hazardous winter driving conditions are possible, particularly where freezing rain develops. Even light ice accumulation can create slick roads, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces.

Forecasters emphasized that the coastal counties, including the Crystal Coast and Outer Banks, remain the area of greatest uncertainty, as temperatures may hover near freezing. Minor changes in temperature could determine whether impacts are limited or become more significant.

Inland portions of Eastern North Carolina face a higher likelihood of impactful winter weather, with moderate ice impacts possible and the potential for disruptions to daily travel and infrastructure.

Drivers traveling on U.S. 70, U.S. 17, and NC Highway 24 should monitor updates closely and be prepared for changing conditions. Commuters, healthcare workers, and weekend travelers may need to adjust plans if freezing rain develops.

The National Weather Service stressed there is still time for forecast changes, and residents should continue checking official updates as the weekend approaches.
