Morehead City, North Carolina – A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect early Saturday for portions of eastern North Carolina, with significantly reduced visibility expected across inland and coastal communities, according to the National Weather Service office in Newport/Morehead City.
Forecasters report that visibilities of one-quarter mile or less are possible this morning, particularly across low-lying areas and locations near waterways. The fog developed overnight and remains widespread as of early Saturday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions for motorists.
Inland areas are expected to see gradual improvement between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., as daytime heating helps lift the fog. However, the National Weather Service warns that fog may linger longer along the immediate coast, including areas near Morehead City, Ocracoke, Hatteras Island, and other Outer Banks communities, where cool marine air can slow clearing.
Drivers traveling early this morning are urged to use caution, reduce speeds, and allow extra distance between vehicles. Headlights—not high beams—should be used to improve visibility in foggy conditions. Sudden drops in visibility are possible, especially near rivers, sounds, and coastal roadways.
The fog is not associated with precipitation, and no wintry weather is expected. Once the fog clears, conditions are expected to improve significantly for the remainder of the day, with no major weather hazards anticipated.
For commuters, students, and weekend travelers, the most hazardous period will be during the early morning hours, especially before mid-morning. Conditions inland should steadily improve, while coastal drivers should remain alert for lingering dense fog.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and check the latest local conditions at weather.gov/mhx before heading out. Travelers along U.S. 70, NC Highway 12, and other coastal routes should be especially cautious until visibility improves.
