Morehead City, N.C. – Major storm surge from Hurricane Erin shut down critical portions of Highway 12 on North Carolina’s barrier islands for nearly a week, stranding residents and cutting off access to Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands.

According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, ocean overwash ranging from minor to major closed stretches of Highway 12 beginning Wednesday, August 20. The final section to reopen—between the Ocracoke pony pens and the ferry terminal—was cleared and reopened at 5 p.m. Monday, August 25.

The most severe impacts were reported north of Hatteras Village, including Buxton and Pea Island, where floodwaters overtook the highway and nearby dunes. Ocracoke Island also saw major overwash that temporarily isolated the community. Kill Devil Hills and Emerald Isle experienced minor flooding, with beach access points and parking lots briefly submerged.

Residents were urged to avoid travel through vulnerable areas and follow local DOT guidance. Emergency crews worked around the clock to remove sand and debris from affected roadways.

While conditions have improved, NWS officials warn that any additional tropical activity could quickly re-flood low-lying areas. Drivers should remain alert on Highway 12 and nearby coastal routes.
