Montréal, QC — A freezing rain warning is in effect for the Montréal Island area on Sunday as southern Quebec braces for hazardous ice conditions that may impact travel and public safety.

According to Environment Canada, freezing rain is forecast to begin Sunday morning, March 30, and could persist through the afternoon. Several hours of freezing rain may result in 5 to 10 millimeters of ice accumulation across Montréal and surrounding communities.

The weather system is expected to start as snow mixed with ice pellets before transitioning to freezing rain by midday. Later in the afternoon, the precipitation could shift again into rain as temperatures slightly rise. Winds from the northeast may gust up to 40 km/h, with temperatures hovering near 1°C. Wind chills are expected to make it feel significantly colder during the morning hours.

Highways, sidewalks, and parking lots may become icy and slippery, creating difficult conditions for motorists and pedestrians. Ice buildup may also lead to broken tree branches and localized power disruptions.

Residents are advised to delay non-essential travel, use winter tires, and monitor updates from Environment Canada. To report severe weather, contact QCstorm@ec.gc.ca or use the hashtag #QCStorm on X.
