Montpelier, ID – Strong winds are impacting Montpelier and surrounding southeastern Idaho communities, creating hazardous travel conditions and prompting a Wind Advisory as gusts approach damaging levels into Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Wind Advisory remains in effect through 11 p.m. MST, with impacts expected to linger into early Thursday for travel and outdoor activities. West winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour are forecast, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph across the Bear Lake Valley, Bear River Range, Caribou Range, and the Franklin and eastern Oneida region.

Communities included in the advisory include Montpelier, Preston, Malad, Georgetown, Thatcher, St. Charles, Wayan, and Swan Valley, as well as higher-elevation areas such as Emigration Summit. Forecasters say the strongest gusts are likely in exposed and mountainous terrain, where winds can become sudden and difficult to navigate.

The gusty conditions could make driving hazardous, especially for high-profile vehicles such as semis, RVs, and vehicles towing trailers. Blowing debris and unsecured outdoor items may create additional hazards on roadways, particularly during evening travel.

Strong winds are also expected to create rough waves on area lakes, including Bear Lake, posing a risk to small boats. Officials warn that small craft could be overturned due to strong gusts and choppy water conditions.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor objects, including holiday decorations, trash bins, and lightweight equipment. Boaters are advised to remain off the water until conditions improve.

Winds are expected to gradually ease later Thursday, though breezy conditions may persist. The National Weather Service recommends staying weather-aware and monitoring updates for any changes to advisories or impacts.
