Burlington, Vermont – Dangerous cold conditions are expected to intensify across the region tonight as strong winds combine with falling temperatures.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Burlington, blustery northwest winds of 15 to 30 miles per hour will drive wind chill values into a dangerously cold range late Saturday through Sunday morning. The coldest wind chills are forecast to range from 20 degrees below zero to as low as 40 degrees below zero in parts of northern New York and Vermont.

Snow showers occurring Saturday are expected to taper to flurries overnight, with total snowfall accumulations generally ranging from 1 to 4 inches. While snowfall amounts are limited, the primary concern remains the extreme cold and wind-driven chill.

Communities near major travel corridors such as Interstate 89, U.S. Route 2, U.S. Route 7, and Interstate 87 may experience especially harsh conditions due to wind exposure. Even brief outdoor exposure can become dangerous during the overnight and early morning hours.

The National Weather Service warns that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes under the coldest wind chill values. Hypothermia is also a concern for anyone spending extended time outdoors without adequate protection.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities, dress in multiple warm layers, and ensure pets are brought indoors. Travelers should prepare vehicles for cold-weather conditions and carry emergency supplies if driving overnight or early Sunday.

For early-morning commuters, outdoor workers, and students, conditions may feel especially severe around sunrise Sunday before temperatures slowly recover later in the day.

Officials encourage residents to continue monitoring local forecasts and wind chill updates, as small changes in wind speed can significantly impact how cold conditions feel across the region.
