Monticello, N.Y. – Residents in Sullivan County, including Monticello, should take precautions Sunday as elevated levels of air pollution trigger an air quality alert until midnight. The alert, focused on fine particulate matter, may pose health risks—especially to vulnerable groups.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, outdoor air quality has reached an Air Quality Index (AQI) value above 100, indicating unhealthy conditions for sensitive individuals. The advisory, issued in coordination with the Department of Health, remains in effect through 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

Fine particulates—tiny inhalable particles that can worsen respiratory conditions—are of particular concern. Young children, older adults, and people with asthma or heart disease are urged to avoid strenuous outdoor activity. Anyone experiencing symptoms should contact their physician.

The Department of Environmental Conservation advises residents to check real-time updates on air quality at on.ny.gov/nyaqi or call the Air Quality Hotline at 800-535-1345.

Another update may be issued if conditions worsen. The alert expires at midnight, but elevated pollution could persist into Monday morning.
