MOUNT STERLING, Ky. – Heavy rain drenched parts of east-central Kentucky Sunday afternoon, prompting a Flood Warning through early evening as creeks and small streams quickly spilled over their banks. Roads in Montgomery County and surrounding towns became waterlogged as runoff surged from hours of steady downpours.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, Doppler radar detected bands of heavy rain near 3:15 p.m. with flooding already underway in several communities. Between 2 and 3 inches of rain had fallen by mid-afternoon, with another inch possible before conditions ease later this evening.
Flooding has been reported in Mount Sterling, Jeffersonville, Camargo, and Gatewoods Station, along with smaller communities such as Howards Mill, Klondike, and Grassy Lick. Residents are urged to avoid flooded roads and low-lying crossings where water may be deeper than it appears.
Officials warn drivers not to attempt travel through standing water. “Turn around, don’t drown,” the NWS emphasized, noting that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
The warning remains in effect until 6:15 p.m. Sunday, with additional advisories possible if rain persists. Residents are urged to monitor local alerts and report flooding when it’s safe to do so.
