Montgomery County, Texas – Two drivers were arrested after allegedly racing at high speeds on Interstate 45, prompting safety concerns in heavy afternoon traffic.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, deputies with the Traffic Enforcement Unit observed a red Ferrari speeding through congested I-45 traffic on Friday, March 20. As a deputy attempted a stop, a silver Toyota Celica was seen accelerating and attempting to overtake the Ferrari.

Authorities said both vehicles maneuvered at high speeds, rapidly changing lanes and driving unsafely through traffic near River Plantation. Deputies conducted a stop and detained both drivers without incident.

During the investigation, officials determined the Ferrari was owned by a local dealership and driven by a mechanic. The Celica driver allegedly told deputies he began racing after seeing the Ferrari and wanting to test his own vehicle.

According to the sheriff’s office, 32-year-old Carlos J. Sanchez was arrested and charged with reckless driving. The second driver, identified as 23-year-old Diego Jorge Castro, a Guatemalan citizen, was arrested and charged with racing on a highway. Castro remains in custody with an ICE detainer, officials said.

The incident temporarily increased risk for commuters traveling along one of the county’s busiest corridors, particularly during peak afternoon hours.

Authorities emphasized that racing on public roadways endangers drivers and passengers and urged residents to keep racing activities off public streets.

This type of incident may impact young drivers and daily commuters who rely on I-45 for routine travel.
