Conroe, TX – An explosion at the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Crime Laboratory Wednesday morning sent one employee to the hospital and triggered a multi-agency hazardous materials response.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. while staff were conducting routine evidence destruction at the crime lab’s incinerator, including materials from the Galveston Police Department. Shortly after the evidence was loaded, an explosion was heard, followed by several secondary blasts.
A small fire broke out but was quickly extinguished by staff before the Conroe Fire Department arrived to assist and continue fire suppression. The Conroe Fire Department’s Haz-Mat Unit also responded, decontaminating personnel and the surrounding area.
Multiple staff members were treated on scene by Montgomery County Hospital District (MCHD) medics for smoke inhalation and potential hazardous material exposure. One employee was transported to a local hospital as a precaution and is expected to make a full recovery.
Officials confirmed that the crime lab building and nearby structures did not sustain significant damage.
The Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office Hazardous Device Unit is leading the post-blast investigation in coordination with the Conroe Fire Marshal’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities thanked all responding agencies for their assistance and stated that no additional details will be released at this time to protect staff privacy and preserve the investigation’s integrity.
