Montgomery County, TX – A stolen 2022 Chevrolet Camaro was recovered in Montgomery County today after deputies arrested a man accused of attempting to sell the “cloned” vehicle through Facebook Marketplace, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

According to investigators, members of the Auto Theft Task Force were alerted Friday to a suspicious listing advertising a 2022 Camaro LT1. The seller allegedly claimed it was a low-mileage 2024 model and posted it at a heavily discounted price of $15,000. Detectives said the vehicle’s information raised immediate red flags.

The Task Force launched an investigation and soon determined the vehicle allegedly contained fraudulent identifying details. Deputies reported that the Camaro’s VIN had been replaced through a cloning process, a method often used to disguise stolen vehicles by assigning them the VIN of a legitimate one with similar specifications.

Investigators arranged a meeting in the Montgomery area under the guise of purchasing the car. When the seller arrived, deputies visually confirmed the car was cloned and detained the individual with assistance from District 5 patrol units.

Further investigation revealed the Camaro had been reported stolen through the Houston Police Department on October 7, 2025.

The seller, identified as Dillard Joseph Davis, was arrested and booked on felony Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, a felony Auto Theft warrant, and multiple misdemeanor warrants, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies said the case highlights the increasing risks buyers face when searching for vehicles online.

The agency added that innocent purchasers often lose both their money and the stolen vehicle once fraud is uncovered.
