Dayton, OH – Residents across Montgomery County are being warned to take extra precautions when buying or selling items online, as authorities report a growing number of robberies tied to online marketplace transactions this week.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), several recent incidents involved victims being directed to unfamiliar or secluded locations to complete sales arranged online. Investigators say suspects often chose vacant homes, empty apartment buildings, or isolated areas before confronting victims and stealing property.
MCSO reported that commonly targeted items include designer clothing, shoes, handbags, gaming consoles, dirt bikes, and ATVs. In multiple cases, suspects allegedly displayed firearms, threatened violence, or fled the scene with stolen merchandise. Authorities warn that these encounters can escalate quickly and pose serious risks to public safety.
The sheriff’s office also noted that some robberies have involved juvenile suspects, who were allegedly armed and operating in high-risk locations. Officials say this trend further increases the danger for victims meeting strangers to complete transactions.
To reduce the risk of becoming a victim, MCSO is strongly encouraging residents to use designated Safe Exchange Zones when completing online sales. These areas are monitored by video cameras and provide a safer environment for meetups.
Safe Exchange Zones are currently available at:
- Harrison Township Substation, 5945 N. Dixie Drive, Dayton
- Washington Township Substation, 8190 McEwen Road, Dayton
Authorities also recommend completing transactions during daylight hours and bringing a friend or family member when possible. Residents are urged to report suspicious listings, unusual behavior, or unsafe meeting requests to law enforcement immediately.
“If a situation feels unsafe,” MCSO emphasized, “leave immediately and contact authorities.”
