Crawfordsville, IN – A late-night traffic stop in Montgomery County escalated into a high-speed pursuit Thursday, ending with the arrest of a Peoria, Illinois man and a juvenile driver.
According to Indiana State Police, Trooper Payton Parker stopped a 2018 Nissan Rogue around 10:45 p.m. Thursday on eastbound Interstate 74 near the 29-mile marker for allegedly traveling more than 90 mph in a 70 mph zone. Authorities said Parker noticed signs of possible criminal activity during the stop, prompting a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy to assist. Moments later, the driver allegedly fled eastbound on I-74.
Officers pursued the SUV to U.S. 231, where the vehicle exited and continued north. Police said the chase continued onto County Road 400 North, where the suspect vehicle struck tire-deflation devices deployed by officers. Despite the damaged tires, the Nissan allegedly ran off the road, continued north to County Road 550 North, and came to a stop. Both occupants were taken into custody without further incident.
During a search of the vehicle, officers reportedly found a handgun and suspected marijuana. The driver, whose name is being withheld due to being a juvenile, and the passenger, identified as Caleb Davis, 19, of Peoria, were transported to the Montgomery County Jail.
Davis faces preliminary charges including unlawful carrying of a handgun with a prior conviction (Level 5 felony), contributing to the delinquency of a minor (Level 6 felony), resisting law enforcement (Class A misdemeanor) and possession of marijuana (Class B misdemeanor).
Trooper Parker was assisted by additional troopers from the Lafayette Post, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Crawfordsville Police Department, and the Indiana Department of Child Services.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
