Cody, Wyoming – A potent late-season snowstorm is expected to slam the mountain ranges of northern Wyoming and southern Montana starting Tuesday evening, bringing up to 2 feet of snow and 45 mph wind gusts through late Thursday night.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Riverton and Billings, Winter Storm Watches are in effect for the Absaroka and Bighorn Mountains, including areas near Cooke City, Story, and Burgess Junction. Snow is forecast to begin late Tuesday, intensifying overnight and continuing into Wednesday and Thursday. Total accumulations could reach 24 inches above 8,000 feet, with whiteout conditions possible at times.
In Wyoming, travel in the Absaroka and Bighorn Mountains may become treacherous, especially for those using U.S. Highway 14 or accessing backcountry trails. Meanwhile, snow removal operations on Beartooth Highway in Montana could be delayed or disrupted. Recreation and travel in high elevations are discouraged until conditions improve.
Residents and visitors are urged to avoid non-essential mountain travel, pack winter survival kits if heading out, and monitor road conditions via wyoroad.info or MDT’s road reports.
Winter Storm Watches remain in effect through Thursday night, with additional warnings possible as the system develops. Stay tuned for updated alerts and snowfall totals.
