Billings, MT – A powerful winter storm is set to impact portions of Montana and Wyoming starting Wednesday night, bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds through early Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 11 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Friday for Montana’s Absaroka/Beartooth Mountains, Beartooth Foothills, and Red Lodge Foothills. These areas can expect between 8 and 14 inches of snow, with wind gusts reaching up to 35 mph. Cooke City is forecasted to receive lower accumulations compared to other locations.

In Wyoming, the Northeast Bighorn Mountains and Sheridan Foothills will also be under a Winter Storm Warning from 5 a.m. Thursday until 5 a.m. Friday. Snowfall totals are projected between 4 and 12 inches, with similar wind speeds that could create hazardous travel conditions.

Officials warn that roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to become slick and dangerous, particularly in high-elevation areas. Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility, making travel difficult. Those planning to be on the roads should carry a winter storm kit, including tire chains, blankets, extra clothing, and emergency supplies.

Travelers are urged to check road conditions before departing and consider postponing non-essential trips until conditions improve.
