Billings, MT – A pair of Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for the Bighorn Mountains through 2 p.m. Saturday, with the National Weather Service warning of periods of moderate snow, blowing snow, and whiteout conditions across higher elevations in both Montana and Wyoming.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, the Northeast Bighorn Mountains—including areas near Burgess Junction and Story—can expect 3 to 7 inches of additional snow. Wind gusts up to 45 mph will create drifting and blowing snow, significantly reducing visibility along US-14, a key east–west travel corridor.

A separate advisory covers the Pryor and Northern Bighorn Mountains in Montana, where 4 to 8 inches of snow are anticipated. Similar wind gusts will accompany the storm, increasing the potential for whiteouts and making backcountry travel hazardous.

Forecasters say the heaviest snowfall will occur late Friday evening through Saturday morning, with snow bands developing along the western slopes and higher ridgelines. Outdoor recreation—especially backcountry skiing, snowmobiling, and hunting—could become dangerous due to rapidly changing conditions and limited visibility.

Travelers crossing the Bighorns are urged to slow down, use caution, and carry emergency supplies including warm clothing, food, and water. Officials emphasize that conditions may deteriorate quickly, especially in exposed terrain and areas prone to drifting.

Road condition updates are available through 511 in both Montana and Wyoming. Additional hazard graphics and snowfall projections can be viewed at weather.gov/billings.
