Billings, MT – A powerful winter storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall to the Bighorn Mountains beginning Tuesday evening, potentially dumping up to 14 inches of snow across parts of southern Montana and northern Wyoming.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, the Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 6 p.m. Wednesday. The impacted areas include Montana’s Pryor and Northern Bighorn Mountains, as well as Wyoming’s Northeast Bighorn Mountains. Locations such as Burgess Junction and Story are expected to see the heaviest snowfall.
Travel conditions could quickly deteriorate during the Tuesday evening commute and remain hazardous into Wednesday morning. Officials urge drivers to avoid unnecessary travel, especially along Highway 14, where visibility and road conditions may be severely affected by snow accumulation.
The heaviest snow is forecast to fall on Wednesday, with total snow amounts ranging from 7 to 14 inches. Outdoor recreation in high elevations may also be disrupted.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts for updates and prepare emergency kits if travel is necessary. Snowplows may be delayed in reaching remote areas, and power disruptions are possible in higher elevations due to heavy, wet snow.
