Billings, Montana – Severe storms threaten wide swaths of Montana and Wyoming Monday evening, with damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes possible through 11 p.m. MDT. Residents from Billings and Miles City to Sheridan, WY, are urged to monitor conditions and be ready to seek shelter as the weather rapidly deteriorates.

According to the National Weather Service, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect for 17 Montana counties—including Yellowstone, Rosebud, Custer, and Big Horn—plus parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, and northern Wyoming. The main threats: wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail as large as tennis balls, and a few short-lived tornadoes. Key cities under the watch include Billings, Glendive, Miles City, and Sheridan.

Travel along I-94, US-212, and rural highways could become hazardous with sudden downpours and large hail. Power outages are possible if trees or lines are brought down by wind. The NWS advises staying indoors, charging devices, and monitoring NOAA Weather Radio or local TV for urgent updates. Have a sturdy shelter plan in place—especially if you live in a manufactured or mobile home.

This storm marks the region’s most widespread severe weather so far this July. The threat continues until late tonight, and more warnings could be issued if storms persist or intensify.
