Billings, Montana – Heavy rain and thunderstorms could trigger flash flooding from Pryor to Sheridan starting Sunday afternoon, as a Flood Watch takes effect across the Bighorn region of southern Montana and northern Wyoming.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, the Flood Watch runs from 12 p.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday, affecting Southern Big Horn County, Bighorn Canyon, and the Pryor and Northern Bighorn Mountains in Montana, as well as the Northeast Bighorn Mountains and Sheridan Foothills in Wyoming.
Officials warn that over an inch of rain is possible during this window, with saturated ground increasing the risk of excessive runoff. Smaller creeks, streams, and low-lying areas may flood quickly. Flash flooding and debris flow are of particular concern near the Elk Fire Burn Scar.
Residents in flood-prone zones—including Fort Smith, Lodge Grass, and Burgess Junction—should avoid camping near waterways and have evacuation routes ready. Drivers are urged to turn around if water covers roadways.
The Flood Watch remains in effect through Monday afternoon, and additional warnings could follow if conditions worsen.
