BILLINGS, Mont. – Residents along the Montana-Wyoming border should brace for the first frost of the season as overnight lows drop into the 30s Friday and Saturday. The National Weather Service warns that patchy frost is likely in sheltered valleys, with the coldest spots dipping near freezing.
According to the Weather Service in Billings, Friday morning temperatures will bottom out between 35 and 45 degrees, with eastern valleys most at risk for frost. Cities such as Sheridan, Buffalo, Miles City, and Baker could see damaging conditions for unprotected outdoor plants.
The chill continues Saturday morning, with lows again ranging from the mid-30s to low 40s. Baker faces an 80% chance of dropping to 36 degrees Friday night, while Sheridan has a 60% chance. Billings remains warmer, with only a small frost risk at 5%.
Officials urge residents to cover sensitive vegetation and limit overnight irrigation. Drivers may also notice patchy fog and slick spots early in the day.
Cool nights are expected to persist into early next week, keeping the region in an early autumn pattern. Additional advisories may be issued if frost potential expands.
