Montana wakes up to a hard-edged winter morning. Snow skims across roads, wind rattles buildings, and visibility fades fast across open country. Conditions are already deteriorating — and they will worsen.

According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, a Blizzard Warning is in effect from late this afternoon through early Thursday morning across northeast Montana. Snow totals remain modest at 1 to 3 inches, but west to northwest winds gusting up to 70 mph will create dangerous whiteout conditions.

At the same time, a High Wind Warning continues through Thursday morning. Sustained winds of 35 to 50 mph may down power lines, damage property, and make travel hazardous, especially for high-profile vehicles. Portions of U.S. Highway 2 and U.S. Highway 24 may become impassable during peak conditions.

Cold follows quickly. A Cold Weather Advisory begins this evening, with wind chills dropping to 20 below zero by early Thursday. Exposed skin can freeze in minutes. Any moisture on roadways may flash freeze, increasing crash risk even after snow ends.

Travel impacts are severe. Officials strongly urge drivers to avoid unnecessary trips tonight. If travel is unavoidable, carry a winter survival kit and monitor road closures closely. Visibility may drop to near zero with little warning.

By Friday, December 19, skies begin to clear and winds ease. Temperatures remain cold, but travel conditions improve gradually. Still, meteorologists say this system marks a clear shift into a more aggressive winter pattern heading into Christmas travel weekend, with additional snow chances possible next week.

What to do now:
Stay off roads if possible. Secure outdoor items. Dress for extreme cold. Check on neighbors and livestock.
