Billings, Mont. – Winter is far from over in Montana’s high country, where a late-season snowstorm is bringing up to 10 inches of snow and hazardous travel conditions through Monday night.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Billings and Great Falls, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect across several mountain ranges, including the Bighorns, Madison, Gallatin, and Elkhorn Mountains. Snow began falling early Sunday and will continue through at least midnight Monday in the Bighorns, with other advisories set to expire by 6 p.m. Sunday.
High-impact areas include Highway 14 near Burgess Junction, Big Sky, West Yellowstone, and multiple mountain passes such as MacDonald, Chief Joseph, and Rogers Pass. Wind gusts up to 45 mph could further reduce visibility in the Bighorns. Drivers should prepare for slushy, slick roads and limited access to backcountry areas.
Outdoor recreationists are urged to dress for cold, wet conditions to avoid hypothermia and stay aware of rapidly changing weather. MDT 511 remains the best resource for road conditions.
Snowfall is expected to taper by Sunday evening in most areas, though warnings for the Bighorn Mountains extend through midnight Monday. Additional advisories may follow if snowfall intensifies.
