Missoula, Mont. – Drivers in western Montana’s high-elevation regions could face treacherous conditions Sunday as wet snow blankets key mountain passes from early morning through evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Missoula, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday for the Butte/Blackfoot region above 6,000 feet, including MacDonald Pass and Georgetown Lake. Simultaneously, the West Glacier region—including Marias Pass—faces similar conditions from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. above 5,000 feet.

Up to 6 inches of snow is likely in both areas, with isolated totals reaching 10 inches or more. The NWS assigns a greater than 90% probability for moderate travel disruptions, including slick roads, poor visibility, and possible closures. Marias Pass, a critical route on U.S. Highway 2, may see the most significant impacts.

Travelers are urged to avoid high-elevation routes if possible. If travel is essential, slow down, use headlights, and carry winter gear. Road updates are available by dialing 511.

Snowfall should taper by Sunday evening, but additional advisories could follow if temperatures stay low into Monday.
