Great Falls, MT – A large winter storm system is set to impact much of Montana starting late Thursday night, bringing heavy snow, flash freezes, and gusty Arctic winds through Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service offices in Great Falls, Billings, and Glasgow.

Multiple Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Watches have been issued across central, northern, and eastern Montana, including areas near Great Falls, Lewistown, Billings, Cut Bank, and the East Glacier Park Region.

Forecasts call for snow totals ranging from 5 to 15 inches, with localized mountain amounts over 18 inches, particularly near the Crazy Mountains, East Glacier, and the Little Belt Range. Wind gusts could exceed 40 to 60 mph, leading to blowing snow and near-zero visibility in open areas.

The Arctic front will sweep south Thursday, rapidly dropping temperatures and creating a risk of flash freezing on wet or slushy roads. The National Weather Service warns that travel could become treacherous across Interstates 15, 90, and 94, especially Thursday night into Friday.

Areas including Billings, Miles City, Lewistown, and Havre may see hazardous driving, chain requirements on passes, and possible road closures if conditions worsen.

Residents are urged to monitor local alerts, delay travel when possible, and prepare vehicles with emergency winter kits, blankets, and extra supplies.

For the latest conditions, travelers can call 511 or visit the Montana Department of Transportation website for real-time updates.
