East Glacier Park, Mont. – A powerful early-season snowstorm is expected to blanket the East Glacier Park region late Saturday into Sunday, bringing up to 8 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 40 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Great Falls, the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from midnight Saturday through noon Sunday. The heaviest snow is likely above 5,500 feet, with higher elevations above 7,000 feet facing the greatest risk for accumulations and reduced visibility.
Cold, wet, and raw conditions will create dangerous travel scenarios across Glacier National Park. Officials warn that Going-to-the-Sun Road and Logan Pass may be difficult to navigate or completely impassable during the storm. The combination of wet snow and strong winds could also trigger power outages and infrastructure disruptions across the region.
Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, but if travel is unavoidable, the Montana Department of Transportation advises keeping food, water, and an emergency kit inside vehicles. Hypothermia and frostbite risks will rise sharply for anyone not properly dressed for prolonged outdoor exposure.
Warnings remain in effect until midday Sunday, and additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen. Travelers are encouraged to check updated road reports before heading into Glacier National Park.
