Billings, MT — A strong winter storm will continue to move across south-central and eastern Montana today, delivering periods of moderate to heavy snowfall and pockets of freezing rain. The National Weather Service in Billings reports that precipitation will persist into tonight as the system shifts northeast.

Forecasters say prolonged snowfall will be heaviest across the plains, with widespread accumulations making travel challenging. Snowfall along Interstates 90 and 94 remains a major concern, where bands of heavier snow are expected to continue through Saturday morning, reducing visibility and creating slick, hazardous road conditions.

A particular area of concern early this morning is the region near Livingston and the Shields River Valley, where freezing rain is possible. Even brief icing could lead to treacherous driving, prompting officials to urge residents to slow down and check current road reports before traveling.

Additional snow totals through Saturday morning vary widely across the region, with some locations in south-central Montana projected to receive several more inches of accumulation, and locally higher amounts possible where snowfall bands persist.

The Weather Service advises drivers and ranchers to prepare for deteriorating conditions, especially in open country where winds may contribute to blowing snow. Motorists traveling early today are urged to exercise caution and allow extra time.

The storm is expected to gradually taper from southwest to northeast tonight into early Saturday.
