Missoula, Montana – A strong fall storm could bring the first significant mountain snow of the season to western Montana this weekend, with hazardous driving conditions expected along I-90 at Lookout Pass through early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Missoula, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Saturday evening through Monday morning for elevations above 4,500 feet across the Lower Clark Fork Region. Forecasters warn that up to 5 inches of snow is possible, especially on higher passes and ridge tops near the Idaho border.

Snow is expected to begin late Saturday and persist through Sunday, mixing with rain at lower elevations. Travel along Lookout Pass and nearby mountain highways could become slick and snow-covered by early Sunday. “Motorists should anticipate rapidly changing conditions and reduced visibility at higher elevations,” forecasters said.

According to the Montana Department of Transportation, drivers should allow extra travel time, keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, and be ready for chain restrictions or short-term closures. The Monday morning commute may be affected by lingering snow and ice on mountain stretches of I-90 and adjacent routes.

Residents and outdoor enthusiasts are urged to prepare for colder weather, protect outdoor gear, and monitor updated forecasts through the weekend as temperatures drop sharply.
