Billings, Mont. – Montana wrapped up August with temperatures and precipitation close to normal, but forecasters say September is likely to bring a warmer-than-average start. Highs in Billings, which typically fall from 81 degrees on Sept. 1 to 67 by the end of the month, may stay elevated through mid-September.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, August’s most intense weather included a severe thunderstorm near Hysham on Aug. 7 that produced large hail and damaging winds. The strongest gust reached 79 mph in Billings, with additional 70-plus mph readings in Miles City, Sweeney Creek, Sarpy Creek, and Hysham. One storm on Aug. 12 caused localized damage when wind toppled power poles near Hysham.

Wildfire activity remained limited across Montana, though firefighters battled smaller blazes near St. Xavier, Mission Butte, and Summer Springs. Dry fuels and gusty winds remain a concern heading into September.

The NWS outlook shows a 50–60% chance of above-normal temperatures for Montana during the first half of the month, while precipitation trends remain uncertain. Residents should prepare for a lingering late-summer pattern before cooler fall air sets in.
