Billings, MT – After a prolonged stretch of winter cold, temperatures are climbing across south-central Montana today, bringing noticeably milder conditions to much of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, highs are expected to rebound into the 30s and 40s, with some locations pushing into the low to mid-50s by this afternoon. The warming trend marks a sharp turnaround from recent below-normal temperatures that have dominated the region.

Forecast highs include around 45 degrees in Billings, 47 in Lewistown and Harlowton, and 42 near Miles City and Jordan. Warmer readings are expected farther south and west, with Livingston near 55 degrees, Cody around 57, and Buffalo approaching 59 degrees. Sheridan is forecast to reach the mid-50s, while Lodge Grass and Red Lodge are expected to top out in the upper 40s to low 50s.

While temperatures are improving, forecasters caution that gusty to strong winds will continue through the morning hours, especially near Livingston and Nye, where typical gap winds may create difficult travel conditions for high-profile vehicles. Winds are expected to gradually ease later today.

The warmer air should help limit additional winter impacts, and no widespread precipitation is expected across the region today. Snowpack will remain in place in higher elevations, but valley locations will see a more springlike feel compared to recent days.

Meteorologists note that this warming trend is part of a broader pattern shift, allowing temperatures to trend closer to seasonal averages across Montana. Residents are still encouraged to remain weather-aware, as December temperature swings can be sharp and short-lived.
